 “Curlew River”, Video  Design, Sejong M theater,  2016 

“Curlew River” was Seoul Metropolitan Opera’s the first production of their series. The work is based on the Japanese noh play Sumidawa (Sumida River) which Britten saw during a visit to Japan and the Far East in early 1956. Beyond the noh source dramatic material, Britten incorporated elements of noh treatment of theatrical time into this composition. With the collaboration of Asian and  western aesthetics, it created a new art pattern that gave the audience a strange yet new stimulation. Along with modern  music, minimal structures were used to project the shape of boat. The production was also highly commented for its use of video technology to create powerful scenes for the story.

오페라 ‘도요새의 강’은 70분간의 장중하면서 경건한 기도와도 같았다. 자식을 잃은 어머니의 슬픔은 절규 대신 넋을 잃은 애절한 흐느낌으로 표현됐다. 벤자민 브리튼의 현대 오페라로 일본의 전통극 노(能) 작품인 '스미다 강'을 관람하고 그 내용을 유럽의 문화적 코드로 옮겨 '도요새의 강'을 작곡한 공연이다. 서양의 동양적 요소의 결합으로, 관객에게 새로운 자극을 주었다는 평을 받았고 음악과 더불어 미니멀한 무대와 수묵화적 영상이 압권이라는 평을 받았다.
